PET-CT (Positron emission tomography–computed tomography)

Positron Emission Tomography–Computed Tomography (better known as PET-CT or PET/CT) is a medical imaging technique using a device which combines in a single gantry system both a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner and an x-ray computed tomography (CT) scanner, so that images acquired from both devices can be taken sequentially, in the same session, and combined into a single superimposed image. PET-CT has revolutionized medical diagnosis in many fields, by adding precision of anatomic localization to functional imaging, which was previously lacking from pure PET imaging.

Indications of PET/CT Scans :

  • Whole body PET-CT imaging for detecting different types of cancers and its extent.
  • Determine the treatment plan and assess its effectiveness such as surgical planning, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
  • Pyrexia of Unknown Origin(Puo)-To Detect Foci Of Infection.
  • Regional PET-CT imaging for patients with head& neck malignancies, prosthesis loosening/infection evaluation, osteomyelitis etc
  • Cardiac PET-CT- assess cardiac function, blood flew and myocardial viability.
  • Neuro PET-CT –cns tumours, seizure foci localization and dementia evaluation.

Patient preparation and procedure:

  • PET-CT scan should not be carried out on pregnant patients
  • If a patient suspects she is pregnant, it is compulsory to inform the same before initiating the scan procedure
  • It is mandatory for the blood sugar levels to be well under control to carry out FDG-PET imaging
  • Patient should refrain from eating 4-6 hours prior to the scan
  • Drinking plain water is allowed
  • Medications that can be taken on empty stomach can be taken
  • Refrain from strenuous exercises on the previous day and on the day of the scan
  • Patients are required to bring in copies of all their medical reports and files including blood reports and investigations(X-Ray/CT/MRI report) on the day of your PET/CT Scan
  • Patients are required to inform the details of Serum Creatinine report to the front desk receptionist/nursing staff/physician
  • Patient is required to lie down still for 20-25 minutes while the scan is performed

Advantages:

  • By identifying changes in the body at the cellular level, PET imaging may detect the early onset of disease before it is evident on other imaging tests such as CT or MRI.
  • Greater detail, higher level of accuracy and greater convenience; using a PET-CT imaging because both scans are performed at one time without the patient having to change positions, there is less room for error.

At Imaging Lily, we have GE Discovery IQ 3 Ring 16 Slice PET-CT with features of;
